在 recent advances of energy storage technology, a groundbreaking project has been unveiled at the 2025 Zhongguancun Forum. Among the 10 significant scientific achievements presented, one stands out as the world's largest liquid air storage project currently under construction.
Liquid air energy storage represents a cutting-edge approach to large-scale, long-duration energy storage. This innovative technology converts excess electrical energy, which would otherwise be difficult to integrate into the grid, into a high-energy-density liquid form for storage. During periods of peak electricity demand, this stored energy can be released to balance supply and demand, effectively managing the "peak load" issue.
Developed through a collaborative effort between the Institute of Physics and Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Green Development Investment Group, the 60MW/600MWh liquid air storage project in Geermu City, Qinghai Province, is making strides toward commercialization. This national-level pilot project features seven internationally innovative key technologies and represents a significant leap from hundreds to thousands of kilowatts in liquid air storage system scale.
Recognized as a 2024 demonstration project by the National Energy Administration and a green low-carbon advanced technology showcase by the National Development and Reform Commission, this initiative holds immense strategic importance. It not only advances China's energy transformation but also contributes to the high-quality development of the storage industry and supports the achievement of dual carbon goals.
